10 TIPS TO AMERICANS WHEN VISITING MEXICO
If you're traveling from the U.S. to Mexico—whether it's Cabo San Lucas, Cancún, Puerto Vallarta, or elsewhere—these tips will help make your trip safer, smoother, and more enjoyable.
Bring your passport—and check the expiration date to assure it’s valid at least 6 months beyond your departure date.
**VERY IMPORTANT** For international travel, most countries and airlines require your passport to remain valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure date. Your passport should be valid for the duration of your stay. Many travelers also keep a photocopy or digital copy stored separately in case the original is lost.Use pesos for small purchases.
Many tourist areas accept U.S. dollars, but you'll usually get a better exchange rate paying in Mexican pesos. Credit cards are widely accepted at hotels and restaurants, but carry some cash for taxis, tips, and local shops.Notify your credit card company before traveling.
This helps prevent your cards from being flagged for suspicious international activity. Use a credit card with no foreign transaction fees if possible.Drink bottled or filtered water.
Avoid drinking tap water. Bottled water is inexpensive and widely available. It's also wise to use bottled water when brushing your teeth to be most protective of your intestinal health. Take over the counter probiotics (eg. sacchomyces, acidophilus) before, during and just after your trip.Use only authorized transportation.
Arrange airport transfers in advance, use hotel transportation, or book rides through reputable taxi stands or ride-sharing services where available.Tip appropriately.
Tipping is customary:Restaurants: 10–20%
Bell staff: 20–50 pesos per bag
Housekeeping: 50–100 pesos per day
Golf course attendants and caddies: according to local custom and service
Protect yourself from the sun.
Mexico's UV index is often much stronger than many Americans expect. Wear sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and drink plenty of water—especially if you're golfing or spending the day at the beach.Be aware of your surroundings.
Tourist destinations are generally welcoming, but use the same common-sense precautions you would in any unfamiliar city:Don't display expensive jewelry or large amounts of cash.
Keep valuables secured.
Stay in well-populated areas, especially at night.
Know your cell phone plan.
Check whether your carrier includes Mexico in your plan. Many U.S. carriers now offer free or low-cost roaming in Mexico, but verifying before you leave can prevent unexpected charges.Learn a few basic Spanish phrases.
Even simple expressions are appreciated:
Hola – Hello
Por favor – Please
Gracias – Thank you
¿Cuánto cuesta? – How much does it cost?
¿Dónde está el baño? – Where is the restroom?
Bonus Tip for Golf Travelers
If you're bringing golf clubs:
Verify baggage fees before flying.
Pack an AirTag or similar tracker in your golf travel bag.
Book tee times well in advance, especially during the winter high season (November–April), when Mexico's top courses fill quickly. Check with the property (or airBNB/VRBO house) to see if booking through them qualifies you for a discount.
A little preparation goes a long way toward ensuring a safe, relaxing, and memorable trip to Mexico. Enjoy the food, the culture, and the hospitality—it's one of the world's premier vacation destinations.
